“Rainbow Fan with Donut Border” – Rainbow Orchards

“Rainbow Fan with Donut Border” – Rainbow Orchards | Farm Trails El Dorado County

The traditional rainbow quilt design has been enhanced with a border of donuts to honor the co-owner Christa who is called the “Donut Queen”. It is hanging on the barn that today serves as a farm stand for Rainbow Orchards. It was painted by Jane Harris, sister to co-owner Tom. Their grandmother, Mimi, with her mother, quilted a rainbow quilt used as inspiration for the barn quilt. The historic barn was built in the late 1930s for sorting and storing apples and pears grown on the property. It also houses the original apple cider mill still in operation today. This is a third-generation family farm founded in 1977. Forty-four years later, Rainbow Orchards has grown from its original heritage apple and pear orchard to producing blueberries, blackberries, plums, peaches, nectarines, winter squash, and a wide variety of apples. NOTE: you will notice that many of our farms began as pear farms… a blight killed hundreds of acres of pear trees and then apples were planted among other things. Rainbow has become one of the larger direct marketing farms in Apple Hill®. Their bakeshop sells pies, tarts, crisps, cobblers, jams and jellies, and their world-famous hot apple cider donuts.
