Farm Trails Photo Flip Farmers markets have become a key element in linking local residents with new resources for fresh and locally grown food. The public is seeking out alternatives to imported produce and reaching out to their local farmers to provide this resource. This relationship has aided local farmers markets with their rise in popularity. The USDA hosts a list of 4,385 farmers markets currently operating in the United States.

Farmers markets also aid the small to medium-size farmer to supplement his income and get his products directly to consumers. These markets give the community access to locally grown, farm-fresh produce and the opportunity to personally interact with the farmer who grows the produce. Farmers markets help to promote nutrition education, wholesome eating habits, and better food preparation, as well as boosting the community’s economy.

Helping give the local farmer an outlet to sell their produce and to interact with the community is one of the goals of El Dorado County Farm Trails. So it was only natural that they sponsor and start local farmers markets in the area. Currently EDC Farm Trails sponsors two farmers markets.

The first market in located in Old Town Folsom on Sutter Street. It runs from mid-June to the first weekend in October every Sunday morning from 8am to Noon. It is located on the 900 block of Sutter Street right next to the new parking structure. The market focuses on having a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables and has a loyal following by local residents.

The second market is brand new this year! EDC Farm Trails is working with the Placerville Downtown Association and the City of Placerville to start a Wednesday night market. The market will be located in downtown Placerville around the bell tower. It also will start in mid-June and run till the first week in October. It will meet every Wed. night from 5 till dusk. The Main Street Farmers Market will focus on providing fresh fruits and vegetables to the locals as well as local wines. We are working with local merchants and restaurants to bring people to downtown Placerville on Wednesday evenings for food fun and community.

So on behalf of EDC Farm Trails I invite you stop by one of our markets and I dare you not to get addicted to the farm fresh products that are available there.
